Leaking Shower Rebuilds in Witney and West Oxfordshire

A leaking shower is often a sign that part of the installation has failed behind the finished surface.

The cause may be movement in the shower tray, damaged backing boards, failed waterproofing, leaking pipework, poor preparation or water getting behind the tiles over a long period.

Where a shower has leaked repeatedly, damaged the surrounding walls or floor, or continued to fail after being resealed, another surface repair is unlikely to provide a reliable long-term answer.

I take on planned remedial shower projects where the failed area needs to be properly stripped out, assessed and rebuilt.

This may include removing the shower enclosure, tray or affected tiles, replacing damaged backing materials, correcting preparation or plumbing issues, waterproofing the area properly and refitting the shower installation.

This is not an emergency leak-detection or small repair service. I do not normally take on silicone-only repairs, grout repairs, isolated tile replacement or temporary patching.

When resealing is unlikely to be enough

Sometimes a visible joint or sealant line has failed. However, repeated leaks often mean water is getting behind the finished surface.

Possible signs of more substantial failure include:

  • repeated leaks after previous resealing

  • loose tiles or cracked grout

  • movement in the shower tray

  • damp smells or staining

  • swollen boxing, skirting or flooring

  • water marks on the ceiling below

  • soft or damaged wall areas

  • mould or water damage behind the tiles

Where there are signs of movement, damaged backing or failed waterproofing, the affected shower area may need to be removed and rebuilt properly.

Once tiles or shower fittings are removed, common problems can include:

  • saturated or crumbling plasterboard

  • rotten timber or flooring

  • damaged tile-backing boards

  • missing or poorly installed waterproofing

  • movement around the shower tray

  • leaking wastes or pipe connections

  • poor preparation behind the tiles

  • previous surface repairs hiding a deeper problem

What a planned shower rebuild may include

Depending on the cause and condition of the installation, the work may include:

  1. Removing the affected shower enclosure, tray, tiles or wall finish

  2. Checking the surrounding walls, floor, plumbing and waste connection

  3. Removing damaged or unsuitable backing materials

  4. Repairing or strengthening the supporting structure where required

  5. Correcting relevant plumbing or shower-tray issues

  6. Preparing and waterproofing the shower area correctly

  7. Retiling and refitting the agreed shower products

  8. Sealing, finishing and completing the installation properly

The precise scope will depend on what is found and will be discussed before any additional work is carried out.

Can only the shower area be rebuilt?

A full bathroom renovation is not always necessary.

I may take on a substantial shower-area rebuild where the work has a clear scope and involves proper strip-out, preparation, waterproofing, tiling and refitting.

I do not normally take on isolated resealing, grout repair, small tile repairs or short diagnostic call-outs.

How long does the work take?

The duration depends on the extent of the failure, the products involved and what is found after strip-out.

Proper remedial work may also require drying, preparation, waterproofing, adhesive, grout and sealant curing time between stages.

A realistic programme can only be confirmed once the proposed work and likely scope have been assessed.
